"My Way, the extraordinary adventure"
In addition to its exceptional beauty and value, the "French Angel"
brings a bit of mystery and magic in the world of numismatics.
History
In 1792, King Louis XVI appointed Augustin Dupre to design new French coins. Dupre is based on his obsession with
the Guardian Angels and draws on the reverse of the medal, an angel on a pedestal writing a document, generally
known as the French Constitution. The popular interpretation of this conception, a democracy is that it proposes
to divine inspiration, for France.
King Louis XVI has probably seen this drawing as a threat to his monarchy, especially with the recent crescendo
of revolutionary activity. He also said that Dupre was a member of a revolutionary commune that began in Paris
the same year. Therefore, Dupre fell into disgrace with the king and sentenced to death by the guillotine newly
legalized.
Dupre managed to escape execution. There are several versions of the story, but the most plausible is that he
convinced the jailer to release him, using a "French Angel" as a bribe. The legend was born.
The "French Angel" through time.
By the mid-nineteenth century, the French captains refused to take the Sea without
« French Angel ». It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte was one on him, he lost the day before his defeat at
Waterloo.
During the First World War, the French, English and American aviation possessed all one.
This tradition continued during the twentieth century many American fighter pilots who have placed their
confidence in the protective powers of the room during the wars in Korea and Vietnam and during Operation Desert
Storm in Iraq.
Even the infamous Hermann Goering, head of the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War, firmly believed in
its power and offered its pilots.
The myth of the "French Angel" continues today and many still worn as a talisman of luck and protection.
Doubtless it a special place in the heart of believers and collectors.
